Keka brings power archiving to Mac OS X

While Mac OS X has a built-in Zip Utility to create and open .zip files, you will need something extra, such as StuffIt, to open other formats such as .rar, .sit et al.  However, the free version of StuffIt only opens those archives, and does not let you create your own.  That is where keka comes in.

Behind the scenes, keka is actually a Mac OS X version of the popular 7-zip freeware program for Windows.  This means it can make .zip, .7z, .tar, .gz archives and more, while also being able to open those formats plus .rar, .cab, .ace and others.  Best of all though, keka is completely free.  So, if you are a Mac user who needs to create more than just zip files, definitely give keka a try.

Note: Keka requires at least Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), so 10.4 (Tiger) users are out of luck.
