TwitterBerry – tweet from your BlackBerry

We mentioned TwitterBerry before as a way to check Twitter from your BlackBerry.  Well I have been using it for the past few weeks, so read on for some hands-on impressions.

First off, TwitterBerry supports BlackBerries dating back to the ancient 7520 and up to recent ones such as the Bold and Storm (which is what I tested it on).  This wide amount of support is great news.

Not so great news is the actual experience of using TwitterBerry.  While it can handle all the basics of sending tweets, following your friends’ timelines and getting @replies and direct messages, TwitterBerry cannot do much more than that.  In comparison to the iPhone apps we reviewed before, TwitterBerry is much more sparse.

In TwitterBerry, you cannot follow tweet threads (@reply conversations), there is also no way to easily re-tweet something, no linking to profiles and no way to search tweets.  You can do all of these things in twitterific and TwitterFon.  To its credit, TwitterBerry does allow you to follow links in the tweets though, but that does little to make up for its shortcomings.

Unfortunately for BlackBerry owners, there are not many other options for a portable Twitter solution.  However, relief may be coming soon.  The Boy Genius (of Boy Genius Report) is working on a BlackBerry app called TweetGenius.  It is currently in closed alpha, but Boy Genius is already promising that it will blow TwitterBerry out of the water.
