Dell Releases Inspiron Mini 9 [UPDATED]
We’ve been calling it for a while and it’s finally happened. Today Dell released its Inspiron Mini 9 for $350. The specs are as follows:
- Base color is black, white is $25
- Uses Ubuntu 8.04, there is also a Windows XP edition but it is only on the higher configurations, it comes out to $55 more but there are savings
- RAM is 512MB DDR2 533MHz, 1GB is only $25 more
- 4GB solid state drive, 8GB is $35 and 16GB is $75
- Bluetooth is not standard, $20 extra
- Webcam is not standard, $15 for .3M Pixel, $25 for 1.3M Pixel
- Glossy 8.9 inch LED display (1024X600)
- Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache)
- Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950
- Wireless 802.11g Mini Card
- 32WHr Battery (4 cell)
So for about $500 you can get a pretty ridiculous mini laptop. Dell has also partnered with Box.net to include 2GB of online storage for one year. Weight is about 2.3lb with battery life of 4 hours. I’m pretty excited that Dell has finally entered into the netbook market and this seems to be a pretty solid entry. This is one of the cheapest netbooks on the market and its made by one of the biggest computer companies in the world so it’s probably going to be a success.
[UPDATE] The Inspiron Mini 9 is available now at Dell’s website. Right now, with “special offers”, there is a $399 model featuring Windows XP, and 8GB SSD, 512MB RAM, and a 0.3 megapixel camera. There is also an upgraded $449 model thats ups those specs to 16GB SSD, 1GB RAM, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The $349 Ubuntu model is only available for preorder right now. It is estimated to ship in early October. Also at that time, expect to see the Mini 9 come in a rainbow of other colors.
Finally, according to the Direct2Dell blog, starting tomorrow at 6am Central time and ending at September 9th (Tuesday) at 6am Central, anyone who purchases a Studio 15, XPS M1530, or XPS M1330 is entitled to a Mini for just $99. For those of you who were going to buy one of those laptops anyways, adding a Mini seems like a no-brainer.

It’s nice to see Dell finally announce this after all the buildup there has been the past few weeks. The prices are very competitive, but Acer did just drop the price on its Asprire One netbook to $349 with Windows XP.
