Cage Match: Launchy vs. Executor

Launchy vs Executor So Luofei talked me into trying a new launcher for Windows called Executor and I put it to the test against Launchy. I’m just gonna tell you right now, in my opinion Launchy wins hands down. Read on after the break to find out why.

My biggest problem with Executor is that it can’t tell an intended program from the first few letters like Launchy can. I typed “it” in both programs, intending to launch iTunes, the picture above shows the results. Launchy works for my needs and Executor doesn’t, it’s as simple as that.

I have a slightly different skin (one of the shipped ones w/ the prog) that shows the list. When I type ‘it’, see it shows iTunes in the list:

Now if iTunes is a application that I frequently launch, I can simply add a keyword for it in Executor. So next time when I type ‘it’, it will show the exact match as you want:

If you think carefully and play w/ Executor for some more time, you will realize how much more powerful Executor is compared to Launchy.

The problem is that I don’t want to have to fiddle with a program’s settings to make it do the job it’s supposed to do, Launchy does it with zero configuration.

Glad I found this to see the same thing I was thinking. Launch just plain works out of the gate. Executor seemed better, and does use less overhead, but if I have to “map” a keyword for everything versus just typing it isn’t worth the trouble. The scanning feature of executor seems to have no value at all or is completely unlike Launchy’s.

Executor will auto-complete like Launchy with very few configuration changes.

However, I still prefer Launchy because it remembers what you launch the most, so that if you launch firefox a lot, all you have to type is “f” and firefox will show up (just like the start menu search in Vista and Windows 7).
I dove deep into Executor’s configuration, and was unable to get it to prioritize my most-frequently launched apps like Launchy. This “smart” feature is by far the most important to me in a launch tool.

I have a dual screen setup and I have to say executor performs much better on that (and launchy seems to be partly incompatible with ultramon). Also, launchy seems to crash quit easily on my vista x64 sp2, while executor is very stable.

As for the features, executor is very flexible and there are none of the concerns I read in the comments above that still apply to the latest version, and the new skin looks much better than the one shown here.

If you use a single monitor setup, both appear to be excellent programs, but for sure I recommend executor if you have multiple monitors setup, and if that stability issue for launchy happens to others.
