GIMP…The Poor Man’s Photoshop

image If you’re like me you’re not willing to shell out the ridiculous $650 for Adobe Photoshop, but you are willing to spend nothing. Here’s the good news, there is a free alternative to Photoshop called GIMP, here’s the better news, it’s cross-platform. That means all you Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX users can get on the GIMP wagon. Read on after the break to find out more.

The professionals will argue that GIMP is not as good as Photoshop, but for the random things I need a high powered graphic manipulator for GIMP is just fine. Did I forget to mention that GIMP is open source? Well it is, and that just adds to it being a great piece of freeware.

Not being an intense Photoshop user I can’t really find much of a difference between the two programs, which makes me feel like I just saved $650, which is awesome. If you are an intense Photoshop user but want a free alternative you should try GIMPshop, a modified version of GIMP made to “replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop”.

Really the only drawback of using GIMP instead of Photoshop is that GIMP is not compatible with Photoshop plugins. This may be a deal-breaker for some people but to me it makes no difference. Hopefully by now you know enough to make a decision to go with GIMP or Photoshop, personally I don’t know if I could ever spend $650 on software, I prefer free.
